An anthropologist proposed a game to the kids in an African tribe. He put a basket full of fruit near a tree and told the kids that whoever got there first won the sweet fruits. When he told them to run, they all took each others’ hands and ran together. They then sat together enjoying their treats. When he asked them why they had run together when one of them could have all the fruits for himself, they said, “UBUNTU, how can one of us be happy if all the others are sad?” UBUNTU in the Xhosa culture means: “I am because we are.”

There’s A Little Wheel In All of Us

All children are participatory learners. They just participate differently. It took Maggie a little while to warm up to the idea of singing in class, but I know she’s doing it somewhere, because every once in a while it slips out and surprises her.

Maggie comes to class every week with her Grandma (don’t let the moniker fool you – she’s got a bundle of energy as big as her granddaughter!). They have such an enormous amount of fun, and it’s infectious. Mom was asking Molly what she was singing during breakfast one morning and caught it on film.

That cognitive wheel is whirling long past the time spent in the classroom. Makes that wheel in my heart sing a little louder…

I know schools aren’t closed, but I’m convinced that’s only because it started falling too late. With the studio on the precipice of Lonsdale and Queens, Lynn Valley blanketed, and bare tires on my car, I’m calling it. Officially. It’s a snow day.

Make Up Classes

It’s cold and flu season, and all of us are hit at one point or another.

If you or your little one is feeling lousy, please do stay home. Rule of thumb for babies: if it’s drippy and clear, you’re OK. If it’s drippy and green or yellow, best to steer clear.

Please feel free to make up your missed class at any age-appropriate class. If you can, send us an email first just to be sure we don’t have too many!

Healthy thoughts your way. Personally, I’m feeling a little pugish this weekend…

Snowflakes are Falling

Worried about snow closures? Check the radio or online. If Highlands School or Carisbrooke School is closed, Notable Kids is closed. We’ll add a day at the end of the session to make it up. I’ll also post it on the website. So far, we’re good for today!

Our Little Monkeys

Everyone has pet names and endearments for those we love. Charlie was affectionately known in his family as their little monkey.

We were lucky enough to have Charlie as a Kindermusik student last fall. His bright smile and easy-going personality brightened Miss Katie’s day every time he came to class. Sadly, Charlie passed away in December.

In honour of Charlie, Notable Kids will donate all proceeds from the sale of Folkmanis monkey finger puppets to BC Children’s Hospital. We have a barrel full of monkeys in memory of a little boy who was a barrel full of joy.

Please help us meet our goal of donating $500 to BC Children’s Hospital in Charlie’s name. (If you’re counting, that’s 167 monkeys!)

Celtic Thunder

Who doesn’t love a little Celtic ditty? This is a great one that is toe-tappin’ fun and explains the different vocal components of a choir. Makes me eager for our St. Patrick’s week in March!
